C'mon Nintendo, Make Me A Believer Again

It has been a love/hate relationship between Nintendo and myself over the years.

Like most kids who grew up in the '80s, it started out all love. I still remembered the chores I had to do to earn that priceless NES, and I still remember thinking nothing could ever top the SNES. I also remember considering Sega to be an unwanted, unworthy intruder (even though I eventually did own a Genesis).

Then love turned to sudden indifference when I discovered role-playing games in the mid-to-late '90s. This meant the N64 was basically nonexistent to me, while the first PlayStation and PC got all my attention; between the likes of Baldurs Gate, Heroes of Might and Magic, Diablo, Final Fantasy, Suikoden, Shadow Hearts, Legaia, Wild ARMs, Breath of Fire, etc., I was in heaven. Couldn't play 'em all if I tried (and I did try for a while). Then PS2 came out and boggled my mind, and while this definitely turned my attention to all sorts of different genres - thank you Grand Theft Auto III, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, and Ratchet and Clank - I still couldn't find a reason to own the GameCube.

There was even less reason for me to own a Wii, as I basically saw it as the first video game console designed specifically for non-gamers. A fad and nothing more, which is precisely what it turned out to be. Then the Wii U was just an upgraded version of that fad. Yay. Well, at long last, Nintendo might finally give me the console I think I've wanted since the SNES and if it turns out to be exactly that, it will be the first Ninty system I've actually owned since the SNES. All they have to do is create a normal game console that doesn't rely on a gimmick, and present their legendary mascots in a new way. Okay, maybe not entirely new (Nintendo hasn't done anything "entirely" new with Mario, Zelda, Metroid, etc. in a long-ass time), but at least something that feels...modern. It can't be that hard to do.

And as I've already resolved not to get the Xbox One, there's an open space in my entertainment center for another console. I'm usually a multi-console owner and I had Xbox and Xbox 360 but I've got everything I need with PS4 and I can't see any reason to own the Xbox One now, or in the future. Nintendo's new console might give me that variety of gaming by offering experiences distinctly different to those on PS4, you know? Just do it right, Nintendo. Do it right and you and I can be BFFs again. And forever.

Myself, although I owned them all, I never much was into the NES, SNES, N64, GameBoys, Gamecube, or the Wii.

I was "ALL"(& still am) a Sega & PlayStation fan all the way.

And I'd definetly have more Sega systems hooked up right if Sega hadn't tucked their tails behind their legs & pu*sied out by giving up completely & ending the history of their consoles.)

Of all the consoles & hand-helds I own, I actually hate my Wii as I can never control my Wiimote from spinning & spinning around in the game, no matter what sensitivity I've tried, and/or how slow I turned my Mote while playing.
I never that that kind of problem with my PS3's Move & Nav controllers

So after the 12 games I originally bought with my Wii, I haven't bought a single game since for it, nor have I gone near my Wii ever since either(except to dust off my black rectangular POS every few months).

"I believe I should have to master the game, and not some friggingly stupid sensitivity switch"!!!!!

It's pretty simple really, make a system with current specs, normal controller and call it snes 2 and there they win the console wars. Both Microsoft and Sony would have a press conference the next day congratulating Nintendo on the win.

The controller they have patent looks anything but normal tho. My problem is the games. There still hasn't been any Zelda or a proper 3d world Mario or donkey Kong games. They already have a normal controller with the game pro so for me, it's the game and graphics.

oh I don't believe for a second that thats going to happen,it will probably be slighly more powerfull then PS4, a stupid controller that tries to do too much and they'll call it friends forever or something like that. They need those wii numbers back so they'll look for something hip to get that crowd.

LOL I'd love to see that happen and while they wouldn't win the console wars by any stretch, it'd be fantastic.

The controller they patent have no physical buttons it seems. Again, won't matter cause there's always the vintage route with the pro controllers.

NES and SNES was definitely a time when their platforms felt like the epicenter of console gaming.
While I loved Mario 64, Golden Eye and Zelda 64, there wasn't much else the N64 had that I played much of. Perfect Dark and Killer Instinct were pretty cool.

GC gave me Metroid Prime, MGS Twin Snakes, Eternal Darkness, SEGA Soccer Slam, RE Remake, Wave Race, Fzero and I suppose I liked Mario Sunshine and Windwaker even if I didn't finish them.

Wii gave me Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 and New Super Mario Bros. I feel I should've played Xenoblade on it.

Wii U has been nice so far with Xenoblade X. Ive already sunk 18 hours in it. I've also actually learned to like Smash Bros. I have Bayonetta 2 in the que. I plan to do the new Zelda game and Mario 3D world at some point.

While I agree the Wii was very gimmicky, the Wii U did try to pull itself away from it. Nintendo made a poorly timed effort to get in good with the core gamers with Wii U. They failed at that but the system is much more approachable now that the games control normal again, at least by me. While the ports arent good the exclusives do look nicer than most of last gen's offerings.

The thing with Nintendo is that they're in their own world these days. that world may not become another big melting pot of AAA multi platform gaming again so it seems to me Nintendo's platforms won't suddenly become like NES and SNES again. Gaming has really branched out since those days and there's just a whole lot of gamer types and cultures now. I think Nintendo should try to cultivate and grow the audience that likes them as they are now and not worry about challenging Sony or MS head on.

Oh, I also liked Pikmin on GC as well. I'll check out the new one on Wii U at some point.

Nintendo is doing nothing more than trying to get people to buy a "GIMMICK" machine to make them more money. As long as they can make it last for 3 years they will be profitable and move on to the next system.

If one of their handhelds ever fails them, they are in deep doo doo.

I would expect that if they decided to go 3rd party they would not make nearly as much money as they do now selling their home console and handhelds. But if they would sell out I am betting they would go to Sony just because of the japanese connection. IF it came to an all out top bid I am not sure Sony could beat Microsoft.

I'm waiting for them to announce whether or not it is backwarsd compatible with Wii-U titles. I have ny Xenoblade Chronicles X sealed and waiting. I can't really buy a Wii-U now, because I'd feel like a fool should the NX actually be backwards compatible and I buy one.

Still, the wait isn't torture, the PS4 has at least 2 new titles per month up until April which I am going to be busy with, which is sort of overwhelming.

I couldn't care less what Nintendo does at this point. Hate to say it, but I stopped hoping a long time ago for Nintendo to become my primary gaming platform again. The PS and Xbox brands both have provided plenty of what I like. If the Nintendo I grew up with in the 80s and early-mid 90s returns? Awesome, I'll buy the NX. If not? Hopefully the PS and Xbox brands will continue to exist for a long time.

Well, that's basically me to a "T." I'd just rather care again about something I grew up with. :)

Current Gen specs and an innovative, yet accessible controller would be nice. Althiugh, with the wii u, other than the tablet, they pretty much did that. I bet they require developers to use the tablet. That would hurt multi platform development

The NES and SNES started it all. Those consoles were on most of my friends houses. Wii was for me a disappointment in terms of games to play. Still my kids enjoy playing wii resort and Mario games from time to time.

I never bought the wii U and probably wont get the NX unless it has a nice avaialability of games that are not Mario and Zelda which I am already tired of defeating Bowser and Gannon.
