Ben's Week In Review: January 4

Happy New Year to everyone! Wonder what this year's biggest headlines will be... ;)

A few words about this PSN thing...

Firstly, let me remind everyone that I was one of the first people to call out Sony in 2011 when the Network was hacked. I also penned an open letter that consisted of common sense and nothing more.

As for the latest problem over the holidays, I think Sony once again proved that they need to work on their PlayStation Network service. It simply needs to be more stable and more reliable. That much is clear and I've pointed that out more than once. All this being said, I'm appalled at the responses of some gamers. I've often accused the gaming populace of being overrun with entitlement and disgustingly massive egos, and this only vindicated such an accusation. People were freaking out that they couldn't log into the PSN. And this wasn't a matter of a month; this was a matter of days.

If your priorities are so far out of whack that you're losing your sh** over this, that's your business. Don't make it public; it's embarrassing and depressing. And as I understand it, this was not a hack; it was a DDoS attack and in speaking to those who know what they're talking about, these are two very different things. I was even more astonished when some gamers claimed Sony's compensation plan wasn't enough. Then I thought, "nah, never mind...it will never be enough for such people, so why bother analyzing it?"

As for Lizard Squad, just...whatever. Boring.

I know everyone wants a new Fallout but I'd prefer a new Elder Scrolls

Throughout 2014, we heard rumors that Fallout 4 might be announced at any minute. But at the start of this year, we're seeing evidence that in fact, Bethesda might be working on The Elder Scrolls VI instead (or in addition to).

I've never been a fan of Fallout for some reason; probably because I'll always prefer the more fantastical atmosphere in The Elder Scrolls. Thing is, though, I've never actually completed one of those games. They're just so massive and strangely, I find myself losing interest after playing for a while. What inevitably happens is that another title shows up, demands my time, and I never go back to finish the massive open-world adventure. And God forbid if another sandbox game has attracted my attention... I could really do with smaller games these days, to be honest. Assassin's Creed Unity requires way too much time, for instance. Woulda loved 'em back in my college days, though.

Personal gaming update

I played a lot of different games over the holiday break for the sake of our Game of the Year Awards. This includes Valiant Hearts: The Great War, Bayonetta 2 and Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN-. For the record, just because there's no review on the site for a winning game doesn't mean I never played it (besides, there are reviews available for the overwhelming majority of the winners). I'm sure everyone has differing opinions but as always, there's plenty of subjectivity involved.

I'm debating restarting Grand Theft Auto V after I'm done with Unity. I purposely held off finishing the PS3 version so I could play the PS4 version, but it has been quite a long time since I stopped. Then again, starting over just seems so daunting, especially with other games sitting in my backlog. 'sigh' We'll have to see.

Amen to that. I had to start Far Cry 4 after my PS4 got repaired and as much as I love FC4, it was a pain having to do a lot of the things all over again.

Yes... I am a very fast reader. I read more than I post.

What was wrong with your PS4? Curious because I had to have two replaced in a short amount of time.

Lol the two I had to replace were from the same store so I want to give Sony the benefit of the doubt but my current one(which is a refurb sent from Sony)is only fairing slightly better as I'm still get constant error codes and OS crashes.

It constantly rejected my disc so it was impossible to play games. I saved the data on a USB then when I tried uploading it to the new system it said "no data found".

I thought I remembered reading that you weren't into Skyrim Ben? Have have things changed? I'm with you all the way. The Fallout games were just kind of boring to me. Not a huge Bioshock fan either but bring on a new ES any day. I would be actually happy for a good while if Skyrim were on PS4 or even a facelift for 3 & 4.

I do prefer fantasy over apocalyptic fallout settings but strangely enough I can say I completed Fallout 3 but I've never completed an Elder Scrolls game.
Skyrim is one I've always wanted to play more of but it got buried under a backlog. Now that DA Inquisition is here it's hard for me to go back to a last gen RPG from a few years ago. I know they're two different game properties but I personally prefer the party aspect and combat of DA over Elder Scrolls' approach.

PGU: Been playing a variety of things, like Drive Club and Inquisition. I completed the original Ratchet and Clank and have started on it's sequel. Gosh. That game makes some huge advancements for the series. It controls so much nicer, tighter, and now I can strafe! I noticed IGN gave it their PS2 goty back in the day. It makes sense to me now.

I'm at the final part of Xenogears, heading to the last dungeon. It's been great and insanely epic. I can't think of another jRPG I've played that seems as epic and grandiose in it's events. I can't say I like it's combat or system of progression as much as a FF. It's graphics and camera can also be atrocious. The game really needs to be remade just to save itself from feeling so dated in that regard.

If you haven't played A Crack in Time make sure you do. It's the best one in the series on my opinion.

That's a great recommendation. And yes I have played it. I started with R&C Future as an entry point for the series and then moved on to CiT. I'd estimate that CiT easily ranks within my top 10 of most valued PS3 experiences.
Heck. I'd say it's Insomniac's best game created to date.

I'm enjoying GTA5 quite a bit. I've made it pretty far. I don't know what it is. I just find this one enjoyable while I couldn't stand the others. Perhaps it's being able to switch between three characters that keeps things interesting.

Also sticky bombs on the freeway is comedy. Haha

I also picked up Watchdogs on the cheap. The hacking stuff is cool but I'm not sure how I feel about the game overall. Also I thought with the dawn of a new console generation screen tearing would be a thing of the past. I mean they managed to deliver a tearing free experience with BlackFlag in the Wii U. Why not Watchdogs on the PS4? Man, Ubisoft needs to get their s**t together.

Happy New Year PSX! It's been a... mediocre one. I'm not complaining but there were a few games with high expectations that fell too short. DA:I was the clear winner. Thanks for the GoTY awards. I enjoyed reading it.

PGU: Have to say goodbuy to my PS4 for while. Which means no LoU:R for a while. So it's back to the Vita and PC and there is nothing wrong with that. Can't wait to get back into Shadow Warrior and then start on Dishonered. Not to mention Tomb Raider 1996. Also can't help but feel a FFVII playthrough in the future.

This year is going to a head melter! This is still the only gaming site I take seriously Keep it up PSX:)

PGU:
I had two great discoveries last week: One was a game, the other was a movie.

The movie was "Her", a romantic sci-fi. Now that was one gorgeous piece of film. Fantastic acting, great setting, intelligent sci-fi at its best. Anyone who says Hollywood is just "bigger, faster, dumber" are just watching the wrong movies. Go see it.

The game was "Transistor", something I'd call a "classic" RPG. Wonderful artwork, and that same cool voice-over and script style that we know from Bastion. It's a small indie game but it does what it do very well.
If you missed it, go get it.

That movie "Her" really got to me. It made me realize the ends of many of my thoughts on love so I came to some profound truths concerning the human interaction with what is real and what is a simulation. Perhaps every love is a projection onto the mind's simulation of somebody since we can never know them fully, and thus always love only a concept and not a real person.

and on and on with such thoughts.... It blew me away what came out of my head while watching.

Yeah I know.

The movie also very well illustrate how love is not a physical thing. Those who refuse to accept that online relationships also can be real love should see this film.

BAHHHH I can't commit to any game, none of these PS4 games are any good so I'm back to DmC and Two Worlds II. Also trying to play Singularity again for a different ending but it's a littler darker than I remember.

Dying Light this month? I might get it for a friend's birthday, can't really afford 2 copies.

Hopefully Raven's Cry comes out. The release date is January but there's no date date. Arg Topware and Reality Pump you tease me for years!

I think you mean "Dead Island" since thats the other zombie game they made. Dying Light has some buzz around it because it has some cool features like very fast parkour (mirrors edge?) moves to get through the city and a super spooky mode of play at night (I Am Legend?)

I advise you youtube some gameplay. It's only on next gen systems which gives me hope because the glitches in Dead Island were mostly due to loose, inefficient coding that required more power than it should have. So PS4 should have power to spare for their inborn mistakes.

Yes Dead Island is what I had in mind. I want a good Zombie game but most of them have yet to deliver what I'm looking for. ZombieU came close but the combat was very clunky. Good effort but ultimately a miss.

Yeah, the elder scrolls and Fallout are both gigantic games, and when then some other games also arrive i can understand that people don't finish these big games,
i like them both and my guess is an announcement of Fallout 4 begin this year and a release end of this year!

Fallout 3 and New Vegas were easy to finish in 100 hours or less, Elder Scrolls games not so much, those go on forever.

I like Fallout much better so I'm hoping there IS a new one and that it is like Skyrim in its infiniteness. I could literally be in that world all day every day and be happy but I can only replay the same game so many times.

Fallout 3 is a great game. New Vegas was probably good but technically unplayable so I never got more that 3-4 hours of playing time. Anyways the one thing that bugged me about F3 was the level cap at 35 or whatever prior to getting the expansions. I literally played the last 20 hours of the game stuck at one level. The gameplay got pretty stale at that point.

Go plop down a few bucks on "Blades of Time." Damn fun gameplay and the most hilariously bad voice acting by the main character who sound like Lara Croft with an IQ of 50. It will have you constantly laughing, you can't put a price on that.

That was a neat little game with simple yet fun gameplay, However I though she was trying to sound like a British Nariko or a ditzy Lara.I also recommended it to anyone for what it cost now.

The rumors have been circulating about Fallout 4 I'm inclined to think that ones further along in development. Coupled with the fact that Elder Scrolls Online hasn't been out a year (and is STILL not out on consoles!), I'd be surprised if a proper Elder Scrolls 6 comes out any time soon. I really hope I'm wrong, though: I like Fallout a lot, but Skyrim was something special. I cannot WAIT to delve back into the next proper Elder Scrolls game. That's probably my most anticipated game that hasn't actually been announced, now that I think about it...

yeah it was quite embarising looking at the respose from people from the christmas PSN/XBlive DDOS attack that jammed the servers that was just stupid

and then with the new elder scrolls it be keen for that skyrim was a great game it they made a more advance and refine version of that for the ps4 would be sick

as for the game awards my comments are on the article you can go look them up they aren't that far back but personal gaming i haven't play much on my own this year yet but i was playing a bit of mario kart 8 and smash bros with my friend the other day and that was quite a pleasant surprise and i reconsidered getting one for my self now but i think i'll be beating some more games this coming week end i think the family is going away this week end for a wee while. but i'm fine all in all

i've just been preparing to get my 1st proper job ever so thats the next big thing on my horizon

happy gaming
